Overview

The e-CNY, or digital yuan, is the digital form of China's sovereign currency issued by the People's Bank of China. The PBOC began work on it in 2014 and started public pilots around 2019–2020, expanding through city trials and use cases including payroll, healthcare payments, lottery distributions and fiscal spending, with smart contracts embedded in some flows. Cumulative e-CNY transactions reached about 16.7 trillion yuan by November 2025, but adoption has lagged because of entrenched competition from Alipay and WeChat Pay. From 1 January 2026 the PBOC introduced an upgraded framework under which commercial banks pay interest on e-CNY holdings, moving it from a cash-like instrument toward digital deposit money.
