Overview
e-HKD is the prospective central bank digital currency (CBDC) explored by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) as a digital form of the Hong Kong dollar. The three-year e-HKD Pilot Programme concluded in 2025; under Project e-HKD+ the HKMA has prioritised wholesale use cases such as tokenisation and cross-border payments while continuing preparatory work on a potential retail e-HKD. No decision to issue a retail e-HKD has been made.
