Bittensor Dynamic TAO Mainnet Launch event
Overview
Dynamic TAO (dTAO) was activated on the Bittensor mainnet on 13 February 2025, replacing validator-controlled emission allocation with a market-driven mechanism. Under dTAO each subnet has its own alpha token and automated market maker pool: participants stake TAO into a specific subnet and receive that subnet's alpha token, so market demand rather than root-network validator votes determines how emissions are distributed. The change was intended to remove the concentration of power in which a small number of large validators could direct emissions, and to introduce transparent price discovery for individual subnets.

Frequently asked questions
When did dTAO go live?
It was activated on Bittensor's mainnet on 13 February 2025.
What are alpha tokens?
Subnet-specific tokens issued through each subnet's automated market maker pool, received by users who stake TAO into that subnet.
What problem was dTAO meant to solve?
Under the previous system root-network validators centrally controlled emissions and could direct them to favoured subnets; dTAO shifts that allocation to market demand.
