On 6 March 2024 the Spanish data protection agency (Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, AEPD) imposed a precautionary measure ordering Tools for Humanity Corporation to stop collecting and processing personal data in Spain under the Worldcoin project, and to block data already collected. The AEPD used the urgency procedure available under the EU GDPR, which caps such an order at a maximum duration of three months. The agency said it had received several complaints alleging insufficient information, collection of data from minors, and an inability for users to withdraw consent. Worldcoin filed a legal challenge but failed to obtain an injunction against the suspension, and the restriction was later extended.
