Tiger Global Management fund
Overview
Tiger Global Management, LLC — formerly Tiger Technology — is an American investment firm founded in March 2001 by Chase Coleman III, focusing on internet, software, consumer and financial technology companies. Coleman was a protégé of Julian Robertson, working as a technology analyst at Tiger Management from 1997 to 2000; when Robertson closed Tiger Management in 2000 he entrusted Coleman with over $25 million, making him one of the 30-plus 'Tiger Cubs'. The firm runs two strategies of roughly equal size: a public equity business including its flagship long-short fund Tiger Global Investments and the long-only Tiger Global Long Opportunities, and a private equity/venture business that Scott Shleifer built from 2003 and led until stepping into an advisory role in November 2023. Between 2007 and 2017 Tiger Global raised more capital than any other venture firm according to Preqin, and in 2020 it earned investors $10.4 billion, more than any other hedge fund on LCH Investments' top-20 list. In March 2022 it raised $12.7 billion for a new early-stage technology fund with a reported 900 investors. Tiger Global has been an active crypto investor, including leading Bitso's $250 million Series C and participating in Nova Labs' $200 million round. Coleman founded Tiger Technology in 2001 after Tiger Management closed; Scott Shleifer expanded it into private markets from 2003. In 2022 the firm suffered historic losses: by June 2022 its hedge fund was down 52% and its long-only fund 62% year-to-date, wiping out roughly two-thirds of lifetime gains, described by the Wall Street Journal as one of the largest-ever hedge fund losses. Venture losses were milder at around 9% in Q1 2022. The firm rebounded with 24% returns in 2024 while still recouping earlier losses.
