Overview
Gary Gensler, born 18 October 1957, is an American regulator and former investment banker who served as the 33rd chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission from April 2021 to January 2025. Before that he spent 18 years at Goldman Sachs, held senior Treasury Department roles in the Clinton administration, chaired the Commodity Futures Trading Commission from 2009 to 2014, and taught at the MIT Sloan School of Management. As SEC chair he took an assertive stance toward digital assets, arguing that most crypto tokens are securities under SEC jurisdiction and overseeing a wave of enforcement actions against crypto exchanges and projects.
