Project Helvetia project
Overview
Project Helvetia is a collaborative research initiative by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub to explore the feasibility of wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) for interbank settlement on distributed ledger technology (DLT). It investigates the integration of tokenized assets with central bank money, focusing on settlement safety and efficiency in a DLT environment. In its ongoing Phase III, launched in December 2023, the SNB issued real Swiss franc wholesale CBDC on the SIX Digital Exchange to settle digital bond transactions; the pilot has since been extended to at least mid-2027.
