Investors fear Japanese bond bets risk becoming new ‘widow-maker trade’

The long-losing 'widow-maker' bet against Japanese government bonds has become one of the most profitable trades in global fixed income, with yields on many maturities hitting their highest since 1999 and the 40-year issue reaching about 4% in January 2026. Analysts tie the move to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's fiscal expansion and a weaker yen.
