China’s Still Building Wind and Solar Despite Risk of Waste
China has about 251 GW of wind under construction, more than double the rest of the world combined, alongside a huge solar pipeline, putting it on track to beat its 2030 targets. But grid bottlenecks mean growing waste: solar curtailment runs 10-17% in northwestern provinces such as Qinghai, Xinjiang and Gansu and wind 4-9%, with only ten of a needed 27 ultra-high-voltage lines planned.
