Canadian Stocks Climb as Gold Surge Offsets Trump Tariff Threat

The S&P/TSX Composite rose about 1.2% on July 21, 2026, its biggest gain in more than a month, as spot gold held above $5,300 an ounce and mining shares led materials higher. It rose despite Trump signing orders imposing 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods including lumber, dairy and cement, with energy and potash exempt.
