Why US regulators missed the GENIUS Act stablecoin rule deadline

US federal regulators missed the GENIUS Act's July 18, 2026 one-year deadline to finalize stablecoin rules, leaving issuers without a completed framework. Treasury, the OCC, FDIC and Federal Reserve issued 10 proposed rulemakings during the year but none were finalized, and comment periods running past the deadline pushed completion toward 2027 even as a January 2027 effective date approaches.
