Worldcoin (WLD) and World ID: Sam Altman's Crypto Project Explained (2026)

TL;DR

  • Worldcoin — rebranded simply "World" in October 2024 — is a proof-of-personhood crypto project founded in 2019 by Sam Altman (now CEO of OpenAI) and physicist Alex Blania at Tools for Humanity. Its mission is to issue every human a unique, privacy-preserving digital identity in an era where AI agents make traditional internet identity unworkable.
  • Verification happens via the Orb, a custom biometric device that captures the user's iris, computes a fixed-length IrisCode on-device, hashes it for uniqueness checking and deletes the raw image. Verified humans receive a World ID plus a small WLD token grant. As of April 2026, more than 12 million humans have been verified across 30+ countries.
  • WLD launched on July 24, 2023 on Optimism. In April-September 2024 the project deployed its own L2 — World Chain — built on the OP Stack as part of the Optimism Superchain. World Chain regularly serves >300,000 daily active users in 2026, making it one of the largest L2s by users (if not by TVL).
  • Privacy controversy has dogged the project: data-protection regulators in Spain, Portugal, Hong Kong, Kenya and Brazil have all suspended or investigated Worldcoin operations. Tools for Humanity has responded with on-device hashing, raw-image deletion, the Orb v2 redesign in 2025 and ZK-based World ID proofs.

What is Worldcoin?

Worldcoin is a proof-of-personhood crypto project that aims to issue a unique digital identifier — a World ID — to every human on Earth. The system was founded in 2019 by Sam Altman, now widely known as the CEO of OpenAI, together with physicist Alex Blania, and built by Tools for Humanity (TFH), a San Francisco / Munich-based for-profit company. The project rebranded from "Worldcoin" to simply "World" in October 2024 alongside the launch of World ID 3.0.

The thesis is straightforward: as generative AI makes synthetic accounts indistinguishable from humans, the internet badly needs a way to prove that an account belongs to a distinct biological person without revealing who that person is. Without proof of personhood, sybil attacks (one entity controlling many fake accounts) corrode democratic voting, anti-spam systems, fair-distribution airdrops and any service that depends on "one human, one account."

Worldcoin's chosen primitive is iris biometrics. Users visit an Orb — a chrome-spherical biometric device — which captures multi-spectral images of the iris, computes a fixed-length IrisCode on-device, hashes it, checks for uniqueness against a hashed database, then deletes the raw image. The user receives a World ID cryptographic credential and a small grant of WLD tokens. World ID can then be used to prove humanity and uniqueness to third-party applications — voting, airdrops, social media, financial services — via zero-knowledge proofs that reveal nothing beyond "this is a unique human."

How the Orb and World ID work

The Orb device

The Orb is a custom-designed device about the size of a bowling ball, with a multi-spectral camera, an embedded NPU for ML inference, and tamper-resistant secure-element storage. It is operated either at TFH-run venues (early phase) or, increasingly, by independent operators under the Orb-as-a-Service programme (2024-2026 expansion).

The biometric capture flow is:

  1. Liveness check. A short interaction confirms the user is a live human (preventing presentation attacks via photographs or 3D-printed eyes).
  2. Iris and face capture. Multi-spectral imaging of the iris (~6 megapixels per eye).
  3. IrisCode generation. On-device ML models compute a 12,800-bit fixed-length IrisCode from the iris image.
  4. Uniqueness check. The IrisCode is sent encrypted to a TFH server, which computes a Hamming-distance comparison against the existing hashed database.
  5. Raw-image deletion. Per policy, the raw iris image is deleted on-device immediately after IrisCode generation, unless the user opts into a research-data programme.
  6. World ID issuance. A unique World ID — a Semaphore-style commitment in a Merkle tree — is generated and signed.
  7. WLD grant. A small WLD allocation is sent to the user's World App wallet.

The Orb v2, deployed in 2025, added on-device generation of zero-knowledge proofs (eliminating the need for the IrisCode to leave the device for routine verification), improved liveness detection, and a substantially smaller hardware form factor. Orb-as-a-Service has expanded the deployed Orb fleet to 30+ countries.

World ID and ZK proofs

World ID itself is a Semaphore-based zero-knowledge proof system. Each verified human receives a private commitment in an on-chain Merkle tree of all verified humans. To prove humanity to a third-party application, the user generates a Groth16 ZK proof showing that they know a private signal corresponding to a leaf in the tree, without revealing which leaf. This achieves three properties simultaneously:

World ID is now embedded in the World App (TFH's flagship wallet/identity application) and is integrated with hundreds of third-party applications via SDKs and the standardised IDKit library.

Why proof of personhood matters in the age of AI

In April 2026, generative AI agents account for an estimated 30-40% of all internet traffic by some measurements, and the share is growing. Without robust proof of personhood, the implications cascade:

The core debate is not whether PoP is needed — there is broad consensus that it is — but which primitive (biometric, KYC-based, social-graph, passport, ZK-document) and which governance structure should provide it.

Origin story and timeline

Founders, team and investors

Sam Altman

Sam Altman is the most public co-founder. He is also the CEO of OpenAI, a fact that has been a continuous source of controversy: critics argue Altman is structurally conflicted given that OpenAI is the dominant AI laboratory and Worldcoin's mission is partly to defend humans from AI agents. Altman has publicly committed to recusing from operational decisions at Tools for Humanity, but his investor and co-founder role is unchanged.

Alex Blania

Alex Blania is the day-to-day CEO of Tools for Humanity. A physicist by training, Blania has been the public technical face of the project, presenting at academic conferences, writing on the proof-of-personhood debate, and managing Tools for Humanity's privacy and regulatory dialogue.

Operating leadership

TFH's operating leadership in 2026 includes Damien Kieran (Chief Privacy and Legal Officer, formerly of Twitter/X), Nick Pickles (Chief Policy Officer, also formerly of Twitter/X), and a globally distributed engineering team headquartered in San Francisco and Munich. Tools for Humanity has roughly 250-300 employees as of April 2026.

Investors

Tools for Humanity has raised more than $194 million in disclosed funding. Backers include:

The headline funding round was a $115M Series C led by Blockchain Capital with a16z crypto in May 2023, followed by smaller token-financing rounds. Investor token allocations are subject to multi-year vesting through 2031.

The WLD token and tokenomics

WLD is the native token of the Worldcoin / World ecosystem. Key parameters:

WLD is distributed to verified humans on enrollment and through periodic community grants, framed as a UBI-style distribution. WLD is the default wallet asset in the World App and is integrated as a payment, bounty and rewards token across World Chain mini-apps.

World Chain: the OP Stack L2

World Chain is an Ethereum Layer-2 rollup launched by Tools for Humanity in April-September 2024. Built on the OP Stack, it is part of the Optimism Superchain and shares sequencer revenue and message-passing infrastructure with Optimism, Base and other Superchain members.

What makes World Chain distinctive:

Privacy controversy and bans

Worldcoin has faced data-protection regulator action in multiple jurisdictions:

The core legal questions are (a) whether iris scans are special-category biometric data under GDPR Article 9 and equivalent laws (the regulator consensus is "yes"); (b) whether informed consent is genuinely obtained from often low-income enrollees who receive WLD in exchange for the scan (regulators consistently express scepticism); and (c) whether minors have been scanned (a recurrent concern that TFH has addressed via age-verification updates).

Tools for Humanity has responded with on-device IrisCode generation, raw-image deletion guarantees, the Orb v2 + ZK redesign, opt-in research-data programmes with explicit consent, and an updated privacy framework reviewed by external counsel. Several jurisdictions have lifted or modified their bans following these changes; others remain in dispute.

World ID vs Civic vs Polygon ID vs BrightID vs Holonym

Project Primitive Network Privacy Sybil resistance
Worldcoin / World ID Iris biometrics + ZK World Chain (OP Stack) On-device hashing, ZK proofs Strong (1 human, 1 ID)
Civic KYC document attestation Multi-chain Selective disclosure KYC-strength
Polygon ID Self-sovereign credentials (Iden3) Multi-chain ZK proofs over credentials Issuer-dependent
BrightID Web-of-trust social graph Multi-chain No biometric data Probabilistic
Holonym ZK over passport / KYC Multi-chain Strong ZK KYC-strength
Fractal ID KYC issuance + DID Multi-chain Selective disclosure KYC-strength
Anima Passport + KYC Multi-chain Selective disclosure KYC-strength
HumanID Phone + multi-modal Multi-chain Hashed identifiers Phone-strength

The 2026 consensus is that no single PoP system is universally optimal: applications increasingly compose multiple primitives (biometric + passport + social-graph) for defence-in-depth.

Use cases

How to get verified (step by step)

  1. Download the World App from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  2. Create a wallet within the app (the wallet is non-custodial and recoverable via World ID + device).
  3. Locate a nearby Orb through the in-app map or Orb-as-a-Service partner directory.
  4. Visit the Orb and consent to the biometric capture flow.
  5. Sit through the iris scan — typically <30 seconds total.
  6. Receive your World ID and the initial WLD grant in your World App wallet.
  7. Use World ID with integrated applications via the IDKit SDK and World App authentication flow.

Eligibility note: at minimum, users must be 18+ in most jurisdictions. Verification is currently free of charge and the WLD grant model is intended to make verification net-economically-positive for the user.

Research and reports

Risks and criticism

Worldcoin vs World Liberty Financial

Despite the similar names, Worldcoin (now "World") and World Liberty Financial (WLFI) are entirely separate projects:

The two have no shared ownership, technology or staff. The very similar names cause significant confusion in news coverage and search traffic — see our separate World Liberty Financial guide.

A separate cross-mention worth flagging: Story Protocol, the creative-IP-on-chain project, is sometimes confused with "World" because of overlapping branding language. Story Protocol focuses on intellectual-property registration and licensing, has no relationship with Tools for Humanity, and runs on its own Story Protocol chain.
