Overview

On 13 April 2026 Polkadot confirmed an exploit of the Ethereum gateway contract operated by Hyperbridge, a cross-chain messaging protocol. The attacker abused a flaw in the Merkle Mountain Range proof verification logic in Hyperbridge's Solidity EthereumHost contract, which validates incoming cross-chain messages before they reach the TokenGateway, allowing forged proofs. Roughly 1 billion bridged DOT were minted on Ethereum and dumped, but the attacker realized only around $237,000 in ether. Polkadot stated the incident affected only DOT bridged to Ethereum via Hyperbridge, not native DOT, Polkadot's parachains, or DOT bridged through other routes; Hyperbridge paused bridging while containing the issue.
