Vector Private Key Compromise attack

Attack · PageRank 0.0000

Overview

Private key compromise is an attack vector in which an adversary obtains the cryptographic keys controlling a wallet or protocol contract and simply signs transactions moving the funds, rather than exploiting a flaw in the smart-contract logic. It typically follows from phishing, malware, insider access or compromise of the signing infrastructure and key-management systems used by exchanges and custodians. Chainalysis found that private key compromises accounted for the largest single share of stolen crypto in 2024, about 43.8% of the total, and the vector remained the leading cause of losses into 2025, when the $1.5 billion Bybit hack became the largest single crypto theft on record.
