Overview

The digital baht is the Bank of Thailand's central bank digital currency work programme. Thailand began with wholesale CBDC experiments under Project Inthanon and later the multi-central-bank mBridge cross-border settlement platform, then ran a retail CBDC pilot that tested the end-to-end life cycle of a retail CBDC in real-value transactions with a limited set of financial service providers, whitelisted users and merchants, using technology from Giesecke+Devrient. The Bank of Thailand published a conclusion report on that retail pilot, with the findings intended to inform future Thai payment infrastructure rather than an immediate launch. Separately the central bank has run a programmable payment sandbox testing baht-backed stablecoins.
