Overview
The Digital Dirham is the central bank digital currency of the United Arab Emirates, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). CBUAE launched its CBDC strategy in March 2023 in partnership with G42 Cloud and R3, covering both wholesale and retail forms. Stated aims include domestic peer-to-peer and in-store payments as well as real-value cross-border settlement for international trade, including work with counterparts such as Saudi Arabia, India and China and participation in the mBridge platform. CBUAE has signalled a retail rollout beginning in 2026.
