Overview

The eCedi is the Bank of Ghana's central bank digital currency, a digital form of the Ghanaian cedi. The central bank ran a pilot in a sandbox environment across urban, peri-urban and rural locations and published an eCedi report on the results. A distinguishing design goal is offline functionality using NFC-enabled devices and smart cards, intended to make the currency usable in rural areas with poor connectivity. The Bank of Ghana has indicated an intention to move toward a retail rollout.
