ABN AMRO company
Overview
ABN AMRO is a Dutch bank headquartered in Amsterdam, formed on 21 September 1991 by the merger of Algemene Bank Nederland and Amsterdamsche en Rotterdamsche Bank, with roots tracing to the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij founded under King William I in 1824. It is the third-largest bank in the Netherlands, operating in around 15 countries with roughly 23,000 employees. After the bank was acquired and broken up around the 2008 financial crisis, the Dutch state nationalized its Dutch operations and returned it to the market with a November 2015 IPO; the state has since steadily reduced its stake. ABN AMRO is listed on Euronext Amsterdam under the ticker ABN and is directly supervised by the European Central Bank as a significant institution.
