Overview

BNY is the oldest bank in the United States, founded in 1784 by a group that included Alexander Hamilton, and the first company traded on the New York Stock Exchange when it opened in 1792. It is primarily a custody and securities-services bank rather than a retail lender: as of 2024 it reported $2.03 trillion in assets under management and $52.1 trillion in assets under custody or administration, becoming the first bank to pass $50 trillion in custody, with 61,800 employees and operations in 35 countries across the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific. It ranked 130th on the Fortune 500. In June 2024 the company simplified its corporate brand from BNY Mellon to BNY, updating its logo and renaming its divisions accordingly — the 'Mellon' name having come from the 2007 merger of the Bank of New York with Mellon Financial. BNY has been active in digital assets and blockchain, including custody-related services and real-time payments infrastructure, positioning its scale in traditional custody as the foundation for servicing tokenised and crypto assets. Founded 1784 with Alexander Hamilton among its founders; first stock traded on the NYSE in 1792; merged with Mellon Financial in 2007 to form BNY Mellon; rebranded to simply BNY in June 2024; became the first bank to exceed $50 trillion in assets under custody and administration.
