Overview

Cantor Fitzgerald is a US financial services firm long led by Howard Lutnick, who left to become US Commerce Secretary under President Trump, with his son Brandon Lutnick taking a leading role. Its most consequential crypto ties are with Tether: Cantor's custody business holds billions of dollars of US Treasuries backing USDT, and Cantor acquired a roughly 5% stake in Tether valued at about $600 million. In November 2024 it was reported to be in talks with Tether to launch a roughly $2 billion programme lending US dollars against Bitcoin collateral. In April 2025 Cantor, led on the deal by Brandon Lutnick, moved to launch a much larger Bitcoin treasury venture — reported at around $3 billion and named 21 Capital (later Twenty One Capital) — seeded with roughly $1.5 billion of Bitcoin from Tether, $900 million from SoftBank and $600 million from Bitfinex. The Cantor-Tether relationship has drawn political scrutiny: Senators Warren and Wyden wrote to Lutnick about it in April 2026. Cantor built its crypto exposure through custody of Tether's Treasury reserves and a roughly 5% equity stake in Tether worth about $600 million. A planned ~$2 billion Bitcoin-collateralised lending programme was reported in November 2024, and in April 2025 Cantor spearheaded the ~$3 billion 21 Capital / Twenty One Capital Bitcoin venture with SoftBank, Tether and Bitfinex. Howard Lutnick became US Commerce Secretary, and the arrangements later drew a US Senate letter in April 2026.
