Overview
Celsius Network was a crypto lending platform that collapsed and no longer operates as it did; it went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy and formally emerged on 31 January 2024 under a reorganisation plan targeting a 67% to 85% recovery rate for customers. Its founder and former CEO, Alex Mashinsky, was sentenced on 8 May 2025 by Judge John Koeltl in the Southern District of New York to 12 years in prison for fraud and market manipulation, with the judge describing the crimes as 'extremely serious'; Mashinsky also agreed to forfeit $48 million and several properties. Reporting has put investor losses associated with the fraud at $4.7 billion. Creditors received more than $2.5 billion in distributions through 2024. On 16 June 2025 the court formally disallowed all claims submitted by Mashinsky and his associated entities — AM Ventures Holdings Inc., Koala1 LLC and Koala3 LLC — freeing reserved cash, liquid cryptocurrency and MiningCo shares for distribution to legitimate creditors. Celsius filed for Chapter 11 and emerged on 31 January 2024 with a plan targeting 67-85% customer recovery. Creditors received over $2.5 billion in distributions during 2024. Mashinsky was sentenced to 12 years on 8 May 2025 and agreed to forfeit $48 million plus real estate; on 16 June 2025 the court disallowed all his claims against the estate.
