El Salvador (National Bitcoin Reserve) company
Overview
El Salvador's government holds bitcoin as a national reserve asset, a policy that began after its Legislative Assembly passed the Bitcoin Law in June 2021 making bitcoin legal tender alongside the US dollar. Bitcoin's legal-tender status was rescinded by legislative amendment in early 2025 following commitments made under an IMF Extended Fund Facility agreed in December 2024, which constrained public-sector bitcoin purchases and made merchant acceptance voluntary. The state has nonetheless continued to accumulate BTC, and its holdings are publicly tracked, placing it among the largest disclosed sovereign bitcoin holders. The central bank has also added gold to its reserves.
