Overview
Risk Labs Foundation is the foundation and core development team behind two related protocols: UMA, an optimistic oracle, and Across, a cross-chain bridge. It funds and staffs the engineering, research and governance work for both, and is backed by investors including Placeholder, Blockchain Capital and Coinbase. UMA's optimistic oracle lets arbitrary verifiable data be brought on-chain: a proposer posts an answer with a bond, and if nobody disputes within a liveness window the answer is accepted, with disputes escalated to UMA token holders voting through the Data Verification Mechanism. Across uses that same oracle for security while running a capital-efficient bridge with a single liquidity pool, competitive relayers and a no-slippage fee model, typically settling transfers in one to four minutes. Risk Labs' stated mission is to make blockchains more usable and cross-chain interoperability seamless. Risk Labs originated as the team behind UMA and later incubated Across Protocol, which launched as a cross-chain bridge for L2s and rollups secured by UMA's optimistic oracle. Governance of UMA sits with the UMA DAO through UMIPs, and Risk Labs has published its own vision documents for handing more control to that DAO.
