Overview
Scroll is an Ethereum layer-2 scaling network using zero-knowledge rollup technology, built around an open-source zkEVM designed to be closely equivalent to the Ethereum Virtual Machine so existing contracts and tooling work unchanged. It was co-founded in 2021 by Sandy Peng, Ye Zhang and Haichen Shen. Sandy Peng, a University of Cambridge graduate who previously worked at the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, leads business, fundraising and operations; Ye Zhang, a Peking University graduate who has worked on zero-knowledge proofs since 2018 with a focus on ZK hardware acceleration and cryptography, leads technical innovation; Haichen Shen, a Tsinghua graduate with a PhD from the University of Washington who built machine learning systems at Amazon, is co-founder and engineering director. Development has been carried out in collaboration with the Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) team and independent contributors, an approach intended to keep the zkEVM aligned with Ethereum's design principles. SCR is the network's token. Scroll was co-founded in 2021 by Sandy Peng, Ye Zhang and Haichen Shen and developed its zkEVM openly alongside the Ethereum Foundation's PSE team. The SCR token followed, including a Binance spot listing.
