Overview
Solana Labs is the San Francisco-founded company that created the Solana blockchain, established in 2018 by Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal; the network's first block was produced on 16 March 2020. Today Solana Labs describes its role as developing products and companies that accelerate the Solana ecosystem, rather than acting as the sole steward of the protocol — that governance and grantmaking role sits with the separate Solana Foundation. The chain Solana Labs built runs proof of stake with the Proof of History timestamping mechanism and has been through significant turbulence — multiple network outages including a 17-hour halt in September 2021 and further outages in May and October 2022, and a 40% single-day SOL price fall in November 2022 after FTX's bankruptcy, given Alameda Research's large SOL holdings. Founded 2018 in San Francisco by Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal; Solana mainnet's first block 16 March 2020. The company later split its activities into Solana Mobile (Seeker device), Solana Incubator and Solana Ventures, with protocol stewardship handled by the separate Solana Foundation.
