Gemini exchange
Overview
Gemini is a US cryptocurrency exchange and custodian operated by Gemini Space Station, Inc., announced in June 2013 by twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and launched on 25 October 2015. It has been built around regulatory positioning from the start: it holds a Limited Purpose Trust Charter from the New York State Department of Financial Services granted in October 2015, and in May 2016 became the first licensed US Ethereum exchange. Alongside spot trading and institutional custody, it issues the Gemini Dollar (GUSD), a stablecoin pegged one-to-one to the US dollar. Its reputation was badly damaged by the collapse of Gemini Earn, a yield product run with lender Genesis, and the company spent 2023-2024 making customers whole. Gemini went public on 12 September 2025, listing on Nasdaq under the ticker GEMI at $28 a share; the stock opened at $37.01, valuing the company at roughly $3.3 billion. Gemini launched in October 2015 under a NYDFS trust charter. Gemini Earn, launched with Genesis in February 2021, froze when Genesis suspended withdrawals in November 2022, trapping roughly $900 million belonging to about 340,000 customers. In March 2024 Gemini agreed with the NYDFS to return at least $1.1 billion to Earn customers and pay a $37 million fine. It completed a Nasdaq IPO on 12 September 2025.
