Substrate protocol
Overview
Substrate is an open-source, Rust-based modular framework for building blockchains, created by Parity Technologies, the company founded by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, and it is the engine underneath the Polkadot ecosystem. Rather than forking an existing chain, developers assemble a runtime from pallets and can customise execution logic, governance, staking and tokenomics while inheriting networking, consensus and database layers. Substrate chains are designed to plug into Polkadot or Kusama as parachains or parathreads, gaining shared security and cross-chain messaging. In 2024 Parity consolidated Substrate together with Cumulus, the parachain consensus layer that connects Substrate chains to Polkadot, and XCM, the cross-consensus messaging format, into a single repository and brand: the Polkadot SDK. The framework is used across gaming, DeFi, AI and supply-chain projects and, per Parity's materials, powers over 100 blockchains in production handling billions of dollars in value. Parity Technologies released Substrate as a generic Rust blockchain framework and shipped Substrate 2.0 as a major milestone. In 2024 Parity unified Substrate, Cumulus and XCM under a single repository and rebranded the whole toolkit as the Polkadot SDK, so 'Substrate' now generally refers to the framework component within that SDK.
Within the DeFi Intel graph, Substrate connects to 15 tracked entities, most strongly to Polkadot, Moonbeam, Kusama.
