Overview
El Salvador is a Central American country. In September 2021 it became the first nation to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar. However, under a December 2024 agreement with the IMF (a condition of a $1.4 billion loan), El Salvador amended its Bitcoin Law: the legislative assembly revoked Bitcoin's mandatory legal-tender status in January 2025, making merchant acceptance voluntary and ending its use for tax payments.
