a16z crypto is the dedicated cryptocurrency and blockchain organisation within Andreessen Horowitz, the venture capital firm founded on 6 July 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz and headquartered in Menlo Park, California, which managed approximately $90 billion in assets as of January 2026. Rather than investing crypto out of the main funds, a16z has raised a dedicated series: Crypto Fund I at $300 million in June 2018, Crypto Fund II at $515 million in April 2020, Crypto Fund III at $2.2 billion in June 2021, Crypto Fund IV at $4.5 billion in May 2022 and Crypto Fund V at $2 billion in March 2026. General partner Chris Dixon co-leads the effort. Its named blockchain investments include Coinbase, Ripple, OpenSea, CryptoKitties and Axie Infinity. Beyond capital, the organisation engages in policy: in April 2025 a16z launched the American Innovators Network with Y Combinator and other AI companies to represent startup interests in policymaking. The dedicated crypto organisation began with a $300 million fund in June 2018 and scaled through the cycle to $4.5 billion by May 2022, then raised a smaller $2 billion fund in March 2026. Its December 2021 $100 million investment in Kickstarter's blockchain pivot ultimately damaged that platform's reputation.
