Chainalysis is a New York-headquartered blockchain analytics company, founded in 2014 by Michael Gronager, Jan Møller and Jonathan Levin — the first startup dedicated to the business of tracing Bitcoin. Gronager, a former COO of the exchange Kraken with a PhD in quantum mechanics, started the company in the wake of the 2014 hack of the Tokyo-based exchange Mt. Gox, with the aim of mapping the crypto industry to identify hacks and other illicit activity on-chain. Its software is used by government agencies, exchanges and financial institutions for investigations, compliance and sanctions screening. The company has raised $538 million from investors including Accel, Benchmark and Techstars; it doubled its valuation to $2 billion in March 2021 in a round backed by Marc Benioff, and one profile puts its current valuation at $8.6 billion. Gronager, who was also CEO and the company's public face, has since left Chainalysis and given up his board seat while retaining his equity. Founded 2014 by Michael Gronager, Jan Møller and Jonathan Levin after the Mt. Gox hack. Its valuation doubled to $2 billion in March 2021 with backing from Marc Benioff, and it has raised $538 million in total. Co-founder and CEO Michael Gronager subsequently departed the company and left its board, retaining his equity.
