Paolo Ardoino is an Italian software engineer and executive who is CEO of Tether, issuer of USDT, the largest dollar-backed stablecoin by market capitalisation. He was born on 22 October 1984 in Cisano sul Neva, Italy, began coding at eight, and earned a computer science degree from the University of Genoa, where he worked as a cybersecurity and cryptography researcher until 2011. He then built trading algorithms for a hedge fund and founded the cloud fintech startup Fincluster in 2013. Ardoino joined Bitfinex as a software engineer in 2014, became its CTO in 2016, was appointed Tether's CTO in 2017, and was promoted to Tether CEO in December 2023. Under his leadership Tether has made large non-stablecoin investments, including roughly $2.5 billion in sustainable energy, $1 billion in AI infrastructure firm Northern Data and $200 million for a majority stake in Blackrock Neurotech. Ardoino joined Bitfinex in 2014 and became CTO in 2016, then Tether CTO in 2017 and Tether CEO in December 2023. In January 2025 he announced Tether was relocating its headquarters to El Salvador, and he attended the White House signing of the GENIUS Act. Forbes put his net worth at $38 billion as of July 2026, ranking him 55th globally.
