Overview
Rune Christensen is a Danish entrepreneur who founded MakerDAO in 2014 and is the principal architect of what is now the Sky protocol. MakerDAO built the first widely used decentralised, over-collateralised stablecoin: users lock crypto collateral in smart-contract vaults and mint DAI against it, with the position liquidated if collateral value falls too far. DAI launched on Ethereum mainnet on 18 December 2017, initially with ether as the only accepted collateral before the system was expanded to multiple collateral types. Governance runs through the MKR token, whose holders vote on protocol parameters in proportion to their holdings, and protocol interest revenue is used to buy and burn MKR. Andreessen Horowitz invested $15 million in September 2018 in exchange for 6% of all MKR tokens. Christensen drove the 'Endgame' restructuring that rebranded MakerDAO as Sky in August 2024, introducing the USDS stablecoin; by early 2026 USDS supply had reached about $21 billion, making Sky the third-largest stablecoin issuer. DAI's peg came under severe stress in March 2020 during the COVID-19 crash, when the token traded as high as $1.11 before stabilising. Christensen's Endgame plan led to the August 2024 rebrand of MakerDAO to Sky, with USDS introduced alongside DAI and SKY alongside MKR.
