Overview
Chainlink CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) is a blockchain interoperability protocol that lets developers build applications which transfer tokens, arbitrary messages, or both together across chains. It supports three modes: arbitrary messaging, in which encoded data is delivered to a smart contract on another chain; token transfer; and programmable token transfer, which combines an asset movement with instructions executed on arrival in a single transaction. Security rests on several layers: decentralised oracle networks of the same kind that secure Chainlink Data Feeds, rate limiting applied to cross-chain tokens, timelocked upgrades that force a review period before changes take effect, and a globally distributed set of security-reviewed node operators. CCIP spans multiple blockchain families including EVM chains, Solana (SVM), Aptos, TON and Canton. Behaviour differs by chain: on EVM networks arbitrary messages can only be received by smart contracts, whereas token transfers can be delivered to externally owned accounts. Typical use cases include cross-chain lending and borrowing, offloading computation to cheaper chains, yield optimisation across DeFi and general multi-chain applications.
