Overview
Chainlink Data Feeds are the most widely used oracle service in DeFi, described by Chainlink as the quickest way to connect smart contracts to real-world data such as asset prices, reserve balances and layer-2 sequencer health. Feeds work by aggregating many independent data sources and publishing the result onchain using a combination of Chainlink's Decentralized Data Model and Offchain Reporting, so that a network of independent node operators reaches consensus off-chain and writes a single signed update, rather than each node paying to post separately. Chainlink offers several feed families: Price Feeds, used by DeFi platforms such as Aave and GMX to value assets and validate transactions; SmartData feeds, aimed at tokenised real-world assets and providing proof-of-reserve and net asset value data to secure minting; Multiple-Variable Response (MVR) feeds, which bundle several data points of different types into one onchain update; Rate and Volatility feeds covering interest rate curves, APY data and price volatility; L2 Sequencer Uptime feeds, which let protocols detect a stalled rollup sequencer and avoid mass mistaken liquidations; and Smart Value Recapture (SVR) feeds, which recapture oracle-extractable value generated during liquidations. Chainlink's Price Feeds became the default pricing oracle for DeFi lending and derivatives protocols, and the product line has since expanded into proof-of-reserve and NAV data for tokenised real-world assets (SmartData), rate and volatility feeds, sequencer uptime feeds for rollups, bundled multi-variable feeds, and Smart Value Recapture feeds that return liquidation-driven oracle-extractable value to protocols.
