Overview

Project mBridge is a multi-CBDC platform for wholesale cross-border payments, developed from the earlier Inthanon-LionRock work by the BIS Innovation Hub together with the central banks of China, Hong Kong, Thailand and the UAE; the Saudi Central Bank joined as a full participant in 2024. It runs on a purpose-built distributed ledger, the mBridge Ledger, designed by the participating central banks for multi-currency payment-versus-payment settlement, and reached minimum viable product stage. Reported results included settling cross-border transfers and FX in seconds rather than days with materially lower costs. The BIS announced in late 2024 that it was exiting the project and handing management to the participating central banks.
