Babylon Protocol protocol
Overview
Babylon is a Bitcoin staking protocol developed by Babylon Labs that lets BTC holders stake their bitcoin to help secure other proof-of-stake networks without wrapping it, bridging it or handing custody to a third party — the bitcoin stays locked on the Bitcoin chain itself throughout. Its mainnet launched on 22 August 2024, and demand was immediate: the initial 1,000 BTC deposit cap was fully taken within three and a half hours. The protocol then ran further staking caps, with Cap-2 attracting 23,857 BTC (about $2 billion at the time) before Cap-3 opened. Total value locked reached roughly $3.63 billion by December 2024 and $4 billion around one year after launch, with reporting in May 2026 describing $4 billion in TVL alongside native BTC custody. Babylon Labs positions itself as building native use cases for Bitcoin, with Bitcoin staking as its flagship product, and custodians such as Hex Trust have integrated it for institutional staking. Babylon's mainnet went live on 22 August 2024 and hit its 1,000 BTC cap within three and a half hours. Successive caps followed: Cap-2 drew 23,857 BTC (about $2 billion), and Cap-3 launched after TVL passed $2 billion. TVL reached about $3.63 billion by December 2024 and $4 billion roughly a year after launch.
