Overview
BIO Protocol is a decentralised science (DeSci) platform that uses blockchain to fund, govern and accelerate early-stage biotechnology research through community-owned collectives called BioDAOs. Each BioDAO focuses on a specific therapeutic area — examples cited include women's health and neurodegeneration — and brings together scientists, patients, backers and enthusiasts to act as an intellectual-property creation engine for preclinical research, sourcing both liquidity and talent globally. The BIO token is the coordination asset: holders stake it to receive veBIO voting power used to curate which new projects enter the ecosystem, and earn BioXP points that grant access to early-stage funding rounds. BIO is also used for governance, incentive programmes and participation in ecosystem growth. Reporting describes the protocol supporting 12 BioDAOs with 125 million BIO staked, about 3.5% of total supply. The project is backed by Binance Labs. BIO Protocol emerged as the coordination layer for the DeSci movement, launching the BIO token with veBIO vote-escrow staking and a curation model for admitting new BioDAOs. It has since grown to support 12 BioDAOs and expanded across multiple chains.
