Overview
Chainlink CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) is a blockchain interoperability protocol that, per Chainlink's documentation, 'enables developers to build secure applications that can transfer tokens, messages (data), or both tokens and messages across chains'. It supports three primitives: arbitrary messaging (encoded data that triggers actions on a destination chain), token transfer, and programmable token transfer that combines the two in one operation. CCIP is built on Chainlink's decentralised oracle networks (DONs), which the docs note have secured tens of billions of dollars of value. Security is layered rather than single-mechanism: DONs process cross-chain transactions, rate-limiting policies are enforced on both source and destination chains, upgrades are timelocked to give node operators a review period, and node operators are Sybil-resistant with vetted security practices. The documentation provides getting-started guides for EVM chains, Solana (SVM), Aptos, Canton and TON, and references a separate CCIP Directory for the authoritative list of supported networks and lanes. Cross-Chain Tokens (CCT) appear as a concept involving token pools and a registration process, letting token issuers make their own assets CCIP-transferable. CCIP grew out of Chainlink's existing oracle network infrastructure, reusing the same DON and node-operator model that underpins its price feeds.
