CoW Swap protocol
Overview
CoW Swap is the trading interface for CoW Protocol, a permissionless trading protocol governed by CoW DAO that uses fair combinatorial batch auctions as its price-finding mechanism instead of executing trades one by one against an AMM. Orders submitted by users are collected into batches and settled by competing third-party solvers, which first match offsetting orders directly against each other — a 'Coincidence of Wants' (CoW) — and route only the residual to on-chain liquidity. Because trades settle at a uniform clearing price chosen by the winning solver rather than in a public mempool transaction, the design is intended to protect users from MEV extraction such as sandwich attacks. The wider CoW DAO product suite includes CoW AMM, an automated market maker built to protect liquidity providers from loss-versus-rebalancing (LVR), and MEV Blocker. Development direction and treasury decisions sit with CoW DAO governance. CoW Protocol grew out of Gnosis Protocol's batch-auction work and now operates as an independent DAO-governed protocol, later adding CoW AMM to address loss-versus-rebalancing for liquidity providers.
