ERC-3643 (T-REX) protocol
Overview
ERC-3643, also known as the T-REX protocol, is the leading Ethereum token standard for permissioned or compliant tokens - assets whose transfers are only valid when both the sender and the recipient satisfy rules encoded onchain. It is an open-source suite of smart contracts that pairs a token contract with an identity layer, ONCHAINID, and a compliance module, so that transfers execute only when investor-level eligibility conditions and offering-level rules are simultaneously met, even on a permissionless blockchain. The standard was introduced by Tokeny in 2018 and is now maintained by the ERC3643 Association ASBL, a Luxembourg non-profit whose founding members include Bitstamp, Invesco and Polygon along with law firms Norton Rose Fulbright, CMS Law and DLA Piper. It is EVM-compatible and has been audited by Hacken. The association reports that more than $32 billion of assets have been tokenised using the standard, spanning securities such as funds, equities, bonds and ETFs as well as commodities, e-money and loyalty programmes. Tokeny introduced the T-REX protocol as an open-source standard in 2018 and launched the companion ONCHAINID identity framework in 2019. Governance of the standard was subsequently transferred to the independent ERC3643 Association ASBL in Luxembourg, whose founding members span exchanges, asset managers, blockchains and international law firms.
