Overview

Blobs are a data type introduced to Ethereum by EIP-4844, known as proto-danksharding, which activated with the Dencun upgrade on 13 March 2024. A blob is a chunk of data of roughly 128 KB that is carried by a blob transaction, attached to the consensus layer rather than the EVM, and pruned after a limited retention window of approximately 18 days. Because rollups only need transaction data to be available long enough for fraud or validity proofs to settle, this ephemeral storage lets layer-2 networks post data far more cheaply, and layer-2 data-posting costs fell sharply after activation. EIP-4844 is designed as the first stage toward full danksharding.
