Overview
NEAR Protocol is a layer-1 proof-of-stake blockchain co-founded and led by Illia Polosukhin, one of the eight co-authors of the 2017 Google Brain paper 'Attention Is All You Need' that introduced the Transformer architecture. NEAR's defining technical feature is Nightshade, a sharding design that treats each account as effectively an independent rollup or app chain, allowing transactions to be processed in parallel across many machines while users experience a single blockchain; accounts are dynamically allocated to shards based on activity and resource use. Nightshade 2.0, which launched on mainnet, changed direction from the original 2020 design and introduced stateless validation to remove fundamental bottlenecks and support far larger user numbers. NEAR also prioritises usability, using human-readable account names instead of hex addresses. Its current strategic direction is chain abstraction — account aggregation letting users transact across multiple blockchains from a single NEAR account — and positioning the chain as a settlement layer for AI agents transacting onchain. NEAR is the native token. NEAR launched its original Nightshade sharding architecture in 2020, rolling out sharding in phases. Nightshade 2.0 later went live on mainnet with stateless validation, superseding the original design. The project has since pivoted its narrative toward chain abstraction and user-owned AI, with Polosukhin as co-founder and CEO.
