Overview

Redstone (redstone.xyz) is an Ethereum Layer 2 built by Lattice, the team behind the MUD engine, and designed specifically for fully onchain games and 'autonomous worlds'. It is an OP Stack rollup and a member of the Optimism Superchain, but instead of posting full transaction data to Ethereum it runs in 'Plasma Mode' - an alternative data availability design in which only a data commitment hash goes to L1, cutting the L1 data footprint and therefore costs for the very high transaction volumes that onchain games generate. Data availability is enforced through a challenge window: anyone can challenge an unavailable commitment within roughly 12 hours, and if the challenge is not answered the chain reorganises back to the last derivable state. L2BEAT records the chain as launching on 3 April 2024, operated by a 2-of-3 multisig with a single permissioned proposer and no live fraud proof system. Redstone never achieved meaningful scale - L2BEAT showed total value secured of about $58.87K - and it is now being wound down. Lattice announced Redstone and launched mainnet on 3 April 2024, joining the Superchain and showcasing MUD-built games such as Sky Strife. Adoption remained minimal and the project is shutting down on 15 May 2026 at 23:59 UTC; L2BEAT warns that users must withdraw beforehand, particularly assets held inside contracts such as Uniswap pools, which will not be recoverable after the shutdown.
