Overview
Vana is a blockchain network built to make personal data a user-owned asset class for AI, launching its mainnet and native VANA token on 16 December 2024. Its core mechanism is proof of contribution: users contribute data to DataDAOs (data liquidity pools) and receive dataset-specific tokens that grant governance rights while letting contributors retain control over how their data is used. VANA has a total supply of 120 million tokens and underpins data validation, governance and network access within what Vana describes as a privacy-preserving, permissionless system for user-owned data. The project was co-founded by Anna Kazlauskas and Art Abal, who raised $2 million in seed funding from Polychain, followed by an $18 million Series A led by Paradigm and a $5 million strategic round with Coinbase Ventures. During its testnet phase, Vana reported that over 1.3 million users contributed more than 6.5 million data points toward training user-owned AI models. Notable DataDAOs at mainnet launch included DNA DAO, addressing ownership of genetic data, and an expanded Reddit Data DAO. Vana ran a testnet that attracted over 1.3 million contributors before launching mainnet and the VANA token on 16 December 2024. Its funding progressed from a $2M Polychain-backed seed to an $18M Paradigm-led Series A and a $5M strategic round involving Coinbase Ventures.
