Bundesanstalt fuer Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht regulator
Overview
The Bundesanstalt fuer Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin) is Germany's integrated financial supervisor, established on 1 May 2002 by the merger of the three previously separate banking, securities and insurance supervisory offices, under the Financial Services Integration Act (FinDAG) of 22 April 2002. It has dual headquarters in Bonn and Frankfurt am Main and employed roughly 2,996 staff as of December 2024. It is led by a board comprising the president and four executive directors covering securities, banking, insurance and administration; Mark Branson has been president since August 2021, succeeding Felix Hufeld. BaFin supervises around 2,700 banks, 800 financial services institutions and more than 700 insurance undertakings; as of April 2026 its remit covered approximately 1,139 banking institutions, 681 investment firms and a growing population of crypto-asset service providers. It is funded by fees and levies on the firms it regulates rather than the federal budget, and acts as Germany's national competent authority within European Banking Supervision, holding voting membership of EU bodies including the EBA and ESMA. BaFin was created on 1 May 2002 by merging Germany's separate banking, insurance and securities regulators under FinDAG. Felix Hufeld led it from 2015 to 2021, and Mark Branson has been president since August 2021. Its supervisory perimeter has since expanded to include crypto-asset service providers.
