Korea Financial Intelligence Unit regulator
Overview
The Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (KoFIU) is South Korea's financial intelligence unit, the government body responsible for anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing supervision, headquartered at 209 Sejong-daero, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Its stated mission is establishing transparent financial practice through legal and institutional frameworks that detect and prevent money laundering. Operationally, it administers the reporting regime that Korean financial institutions must follow: suspicious transaction reports, currency transaction reports, and customer due diligence obligations. Its remit extends to counter-financing of terrorism and to countering proliferation financing, including managing designated persons and entities lists and proliferation-financing regulations. For the crypto industry, KoFIU is the decisive Korean regulator: it maintains and publishes the VASP (virtual asset service provider) registration regime, meaning exchanges and other crypto businesses must register with KoFIU and satisfy its AML requirements to operate legally in Korea. Internationally, KoFIU participates in the FATF, the Egmont Group of financial intelligence units, and the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering. KoFIU built its AML/CFT framework around suspicious transaction and currency transaction reporting and customer due diligence, and extended it to virtual assets by establishing a mandatory VASP registration regime whose status list it publishes.
