Overview

cbETH (Coinbase Wrapped Staked ETH) is a liquid staking token issued by Coinbase: the staked asset is Ethereum (ETH) and both the staking provider and the token issuer are Coinbase. It exists so that customers whose ETH is staked through Coinbase can hold a transferable ERC-20 representation of that position instead of having capital locked in the validator queue, and can wrap and unwrap between staked ETH and cbETH. Because staking rewards accrue to the underlying position rather than by increasing token balances, cbETH trades at an exchange rate against ETH rather than at parity. As a custodial liquid staking token, cbETH carries issuer and validator risk concentrated in Coinbase, in contrast with protocol-issued alternatives. As of sources reviewed in July 2026, no announcement of a wind-down or discontinuation of cbETH had been published, and the token remained actively traded and quoted on Coinbase and major market-data venues.

Within the DeFi Intel graph, cbETH connects to 6 tracked entities, most strongly to Ethereum, EigenLayer, Coinbase.
