Monerium EUR emoney token
Overview
EURe (Monerium EUR emoney) is a euro-denominated stablecoin issued as regulated electronic money by Monerium EMI ehf, an Icelandic company licensed as an Electronic Money Institution by the Central Bank of Iceland and passported across the EU/EEA. Monerium was the first EMI authorised to issue e-money on a public blockchain, in 2019, and the project traces back to 2016. Legally EURe is redeemable electronic money rather than a collateralised or algorithmic stablecoin, so holders have a direct redemption claim; each token is backed 1:1 by safeguarded euro deposits in custodial accounts. It operates under EU e-money rules and MiCA, and Monerium markets EURe as a MiCA-compliant euro stablecoin that can be paired with an IBAN so euros move between bank accounts and blockchain wallets. EURe is available on Ethereum, Polygon and Gnosis. In 2024 Monerium upgraded its token contracts, migrating EURe from V1 to V2, with the legacy token now tracked separately as EUREV1. Monerium began in 2016 and in 2019 became the first Electronic Money Institution authorised to issue e-money on a public blockchain. In 2024 it migrated EURe from V1 contracts to V2. Monerium is a member of the MiCA Crypto Alliance and positions EURe under the MiCA e-money token regime.
