Overview

Proposer-builder separation (PBS) is an Ethereum design that splits the roles currently held by a single validator: specialized block builders assemble blocks and bid them to the validator chosen as proposer, who selects the most profitable bid without seeing the block's contents. Ethereum researchers pursue PBS for three reasons: it makes transaction censorship harder, especially when combined with mechanisms such as inclusion lists and encrypted mempools; it spreads MEV revenue across all validators including solo home stakers rather than concentrating it with sophisticated operators; and it is a prerequisite for Danksharding, where builders must compute proofs over large volumes of data. Ethereum's roadmap describes enshrined PBS as still in an advanced research stage without a finalised specification.
