Overview
Beam is an open-source sovereign blockchain network built on the Avalanche technology stack, described in its documentation as permissionless and open to everyone and originally aimed at the next generation of web3 users, with a strong emphasis on gaming and an SDK for game developers. The BEAM token is the network's gas token, its medium of exchange, its governance token, and the asset staked for participation in network validation under the proof-of-stake model introduced by the Horizon upgrade; governance is exercised by BEAM tokenholders alongside DAO-adjacent entities. The wider Beam organisation has since repositioned itself publicly as an innovation lab working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, trading and blockchain, operating through six divisions spanning DeFi, data-compute and decentralised applications.
